A living
martial art.

Buddhakado is not a copy of an existing Japanese style. Its roots are in Nepal. Its evolution in Belgium brought the original Nepali identity fully back to the foreground.

From Nepal to Belgium

In the early 1990s, the founder, Maha Guru, came to Belgium and began teaching a Nepali full contact style known in Nepal as Buddhakado.

Because Japanese martial arts were much more familiar in Europe at the time, terminology that was more recognisable to a European audience was initially used. In 2002, the organisation returned to Nepali terminology. Since 2016, the original name Buddhakado has also been used again.

Why does the style keep evolving?

Because self-defence does not belong in a museum. Techniques are judged on efficiency, mobility and practical use. That is why Buddhakado brings together yantra (forms), stand-up fighting, close combat, ground work, self-defence, fitness and full contact.

Tradition provides direction. Practice determines whether a technique earns its place.

KaliDo Alliance

Buddhakado is part of the KaliDo Alliance. Within that cooperation, Buddhakado retains its own Nepali identity, terminology and methodology.
